Camas Kitchen Part 2: The Details – Materials, Fixtures, and Finishes

Updated: Apr 7

In Part 1, we outlined the overall vision for Jessica and Pete’s Camas Kitchen remodel, which focused on creating a spacious, open layout that could accommodate their family’s needs and hosting goals. Now, it’s time to dive into the details—the materials, finishes, and custom features that make this kitchen both functional and beautiful. Every choice was made to reflect the family’s style, enhance everyday use, and create a welcoming atmosphere for gatherings.

Tile, Countertops, and Backsplash: Timeless Elegance Meets Function

When it came to selecting the materials, Jessica and Pete wanted a combination of timeless elegance and practicality. We chose a stunning quartz for the countertops, with dramatic veining that really made the the island a show-stopping feature.

For the backsplash, we opted for a sleek, green tile that complements the rich tones of the hammered copper range hood, which Jessica and Pete had envisioned from the start. This bold combination of textures and colors creates a kitchen that feels both grounded and elevated, but still feels timeless to the PNW.

Cabinetry and Storage Solutions: Maximizing Functionality

The cabinetry was custom-built onsite by a talented local carpenter named Hyrum, who did tremendous work to bring this vision to life. While we initially planned for cabinetry in one section of the kitchen, a foundation issue required a shift in our approach. Hyrum worked closely with the team to create a creative solution: rather than cabinetry, we added a custom bench that fits perfectly in the space and offers a functional seating area.

The bench has become one of the best parts of the kitchen. Pete and Jessica love to cook together, and now one of them can cook while the other sits, enjoys a cocktail, and shares about their day. It’s a cozy and practical space that enhances their connection during the evenings and while hosting friends and family.

The rest of the cabinetry includes plenty of drawers and cabinets with built-in organization features, including pull-out shelves and dedicated spaces for pantry items, cooking tools, and small appliances. The cabinetry design maximizes storage while keeping the kitchen looking clean and organized.

Statement Hood: The Focal Point

A standout feature of this remodel is the hammered copper range hood. Jessica and Pete were inspired by this striking material in our initial design meeting, and it quickly became the focal point of the kitchen. The rich, textured finish of the copper adds warmth and character, perfectly complementing the green backsplash and making the range area truly pop. Not only is it a visual centerpiece, but it also ensures excellent ventilation for the kitchen.

Coffee/Cocktail Area: A Touch of Elegance for Entertaining

While the wine fridge was ultimately not installed in the coffee/cocktail area, we still created a stylish and functional space for Jessica and Pete’s entertaining needs. The open shelves are made from the same wood as the custom bench, tying the two elements together beautifully. This cohesive design makes the area feel warm and inviting, perfect for hosting family and friends.

Hardware: Subtle Details for a Cohesive Look

The hardware throughout the kitchen is oil-rubbed bronze, chosen to play into the brown and gold undertones of the hammered copper hood. This finish adds a touch of warmth and sophistication, while also tying together the various design elements in the kitchen. It’s a small detail that enhances the overall cohesive feel of the space.

Lighting and Fixtures: Creating Atmosphere

Instead of pendant lights above the island, we kept the lighting minimal with recessed fixtures to maintain a clean, uncluttered look. This allows the natural beauty of the materials and the statement pieces to shine. The overall lighting design ensures the space remains bright and functional without competing with the other design elements. But don’t worry, we made sure functionality was paramount. You’ll find under-cabinet lighting throughout the kitchen with dimming capabilities. It’s the perfect mix of task lighting or lowering the intensity to set an evening glow

In Part 3 of this series, we’ll take a look at the final reveal of the kitchen and see how all the pieces come together to create a truly stunning space. Stay tuned!
